For the body's own power to heal
I am a certified laser therapist, and many people ask me: what is laser, really — and how can it help the body to heal? Let me explain a little, in simple terms.
Laser light is a special kind of light — concentrated into a single wavelength — that can affect the body's cells in a very gentle and effective way.
In medical laser therapy, the light is used to ease pain and inflammation, stimulate healing and support the body's natural balance. The treatment is completely non-invasive, painless and safe — and has been used in care and rehabilitation for more than 50 years.
How does laser therapy work?
The laser light stimulates the cells' energy metabolism, which in turn:
- strengthens the immune system
- eases pain
- reduces swelling and inflammation
- increases circulation
- supports healing in muscles, tendons and joints
Laser can be used both for acute injuries and for long-standing complaints, for example:
- pain and stiffness in joints and muscles
- inflammation in tendons and nerves
- overuse and sports injuries
- osteoarthritis, rheumatic complaints, swelling, oedema
- In depth: laser therapy for osteoarthritis
- dental and jaw problems
- slow-healing wounds and skin problems, and more
What a treatment is like
During the treatment, the area where the problem lies is bathed in a soft laser light. I use different types of light depending on what is being treated — infrared light reaches deep into the tissue, while red, green and blue light are used for more superficial complaints.
The treatment is usually experienced as very pleasant and relaxing. Many notice a clear easing of pain or greater mobility after the very first session.
After the treatment
- temporary tenderness once the healing process has begun
- improved mobility or less pain
- a feeling of tiredness or deeper sleep
When healthy tissue is treated, on the other hand, nothing happens — the body simply takes in what it needs.
How many treatments are needed?
It varies, but several treatments in a row are usually needed, especially for long-standing complaints. Commonly this is 1–3 treatments a week over a period, after which we review the result together and set out a plan for continuing.
